Everything you know about electricity is wrong

Interesting opinion piece on the ABC website here about energy vs fuels.

Quotable quote:

"People ask 'do we need nuclear power?'. To me that's like asking 'do we need a broken leg?' If you're really serious about climate - and you'd better be - why pick the slowest, the most expensive, the narrowest, the most inflexible and the riskiest of all the options to put your political weight behind?"

  1. An issue that needs to be considered is the implications of the form of energy production for the structuring of society.

Nuclear energy requires a powerful, intrusive state to keep us safe from the risks associated with the mining, production, decommissioning and safe handling of the long lasting waste.

  2. Thanks Vikram - sorry for the quiet month - issues to deal with. Yes Doug true - the state needs to be intrusive, but maybe less perjoratively also forward thinking, long term thinking (10s of thousands of years in some cases) beyond the election cycle and very stable. Who can guarantee all of that?
